Why is it important to encourage learning during the holidays?

During the holidays, students have more time to discover what really interests them, explore new skills, and reinforce what they’ve learned—without the pressure of exams, tests, or grades. That’s why summer can be an excellent time for learning to arise from motivation and personal curiosity.

This is essential for children with a strong interest in learning, who enjoy discovering new things or diving deep into topics they’re passionate about. Providing them with suitable resources can be key to keeping that natural motivation alive.

Of course, this learning must be voluntary and tailored to each student. It’s not about imposing tasks or homework, but about offering resources that align with what motivates them and spark their interest.

Resources to continue learning during the holidays

1. Encouraging summer reading

Summer is a great time to indulge in personal reading preferences. While there are usually mandatory readings during the school year, in summer your students have total freedom to read whatever they like most.

What if you helped them find that one book that will stay with them for life? You can recommend books based on their interests or on the topics they’ve shown most interest in during the year.

A great way to send them these recommendations is through Edvoice, Additio App’s communication platform. There you can launch little summer reading challenges, like: “Who can read three different genres before September?”

This will motivate your students and help them enjoy reading even more.

2. Making good use of mobile devices

Outside the classroom, it’s hard to control how students use mobile devices. Even so, these devices can be powerful tools if used well. So summer is an ideal time to use educational apps that allow fun learning.

A great educational app is Duolingo. It lets your students continue practicing the foreign language they’re learning (Spanish, French, German, Italian…), in an enjoyable way.

If you want to reinforce language skills, they’ll love the challenge of Wordle. It became popular a few years ago and is a great game to test their language abilities.

If you’d rather reinforce math skills, websites and apps like Matific will challenge them to put into practice what they’ve learned in class.

Once your students return to school in September, you can use the quizzes feature to do a little review of what they’ve learned on their own over the summer.

3. More relaxed holiday learning: educational challenges

Proposing educational challenges is a fun way to encourage learning in summer. It motivates students to learn through small missions, challenges or activities that spark their curiosity and foster independence. In summer, this allows them to keep learning based on their own interests.

Educational challenges have many benefits worth knowing:

  • They encourage critical and creative thinking.
  • They promote responsibility and self-reflection.
  • They develop skills like communication and collaboration.

Here are a few educational challenges to motivate your students this summer:

  • Summer diary: students can keep a diary of what they’ve done, felt or learned during the summer. This is a great way to work on written expression, personal reflection, and consistency. Plus, it can be adapted to any age, and doesn’t need to include just text: they can add photos, objects, drawings… whatever!
  • Photo challenge: for students interested in photography or the arts, encourage them to do a photo challenge. They’ll take pictures on different themes, and when back in September, they can present a small photo exhibit where they explain the whole process.
  • Family challenge: Summer is also a time when students spend more time with their families. So it could be a great opportunity to encourage them to create a family tree, or even interview a family member.

You can share all these challenges via Edvoice, detailing the activities they can do and the rules of each challenge.

4. Summer camps: learning as a community too

Summer camps often include activities that reinforce teamwork, independence, and creativity. If your school organizes one, the monitors can create a class group in Additio App to manage attendance, share photos with families or even assess competence-based skills like cooperation or initiative.

5. Summer learning: encourage it through experiences

Museums, nature walks, visits to historical monuments, interactive science centers, planetariums or natural parks can become true outdoor classrooms. No need to go far: sometimes, a visit to a local library or a stroll through a street market already offers a great learning opportunity.

You can suggest nearby places that might interest your students, or send links to virtual tours for families who can’t travel.

Tips for offering clear guidance to families

Many families appreciate it when schools give them ideas to support their children’s learning without resorting to rigid or mandatory tasks. You can send them some general recommendations such as:

  • Establish gentle routines that balance play, rest and exploration.
  • Support without pressure, encouraging curiosity rather than obligation. If they don’t want to do something, they don’t have to.
  • Take advantage of everyday situations as learning opportunities: cooking together, planning a trip, observing nature, solving small problems…

In short, learning can be fun

Summer can be a great opportunity to learn from different places, at different paces, and in different ways. The important thing is not to fill time with educational activities, but to create spaces where students discover that learning can also be fun and aligned with their interests.
